Over the final six many years, the sphere of geophysics has skilled swift improvement. Seismic equipment, magnetic reports, hydrology and atmospheric sciences have elevated because of a increase within the computing device sciences and dimension concepts. The frontiers of geophysics have additionally increased, now together with study at the polar components, either Arctic and Antarctic. a lot of these occasions are essentially mirrored within the 60-year-long historical past of the Institute of Geophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences. This quantity describes the main admired achievements, the background of analysis and in addition the long run power of the Institute of Geophysics PAS. It describes measurements in numerous tasks, tools of examining medical facts, and final yet now not least the folk who've pushed this study in lots of medical projects.

Professor Richard (Rick) Sibson revolutionized structural geology via illustrating that fault rocks comprise an built-in checklist of earthquakes. Fault-rock textures increase according to geological and actual variables resembling composition, environmental stipulations (e. g. temperature and pressure), fluid presence and pressure fee.

The Department implemented a comprehensive programme of research assessing the impact of climate change on water resources in Poland. For this purpose, potential climate change scenarios in particular areas were developed and assessment of the state of water resources carried out. The CLIRUN programme for the assessment of water balance developed by the Department was recommended by the US Team Country Study for use in more than fifty countries of the world. The Department also proposed methods for the adaptation of water management to observed changes in climate.

On the basis of these measurements and additional magneto-helio-geophysical data, the couplings between the solar wind, magnetosphere, ionosphere and the lower atmosphere are analysed. Simultaneous analysis of electrical parameters in mid-latitudes (S´wider) and in the polar regions (Hornsund) allows us to analyse the propagation of magnetospheric effects. Research on storm electricity in Warszawa has been conducted by the Department of Atmospheric Physics since the 1970s. Recently, the Department has attained a number of spectacular successes in the field of the boundary-layer meteorology (in the air layer directly above earth’s surface), pertaining especially to large-eddy simulations and similarity theory analyses.

Subsequently, in 1919, the Chair of Astronomy and Geophysics became just the Chair of Astronomy, led by Prof. Tadeusz Banachiewicz (1882–1954), eminent astronomer, geodesist and mathematician. g. in gravimetry, was conducted there, but the Cracow seismological station declined because of technical problems. It restored full functioning in 1927 (after 6 year break). When Prof. Rudzki passed away, seismological reports from Cracow ceased to be published till 1955. After the First World War, in reborn Poland, two academic centres for geophysics have been established.
