The age and metamorphic conditions of the aureole record the history of juxtaposition of obducted ophiolites (Laurent, 1975) with the ancient passive margin of North America. Baie Verte Brompton Line and Eastern Zones The Hazens Notch and included Belvidere Mountain complex rocks are terminated to the east by the Baie Verte - Brompton line (BVB line; Williams and St. Julien, 1982). In northern Vermont, the BVB line approximates the outcrop width of the steeply-plunging Ottauquechee Formation and the Caldwell equivalents (COo and Cca, respectively, Fig.

2). Lithic symbols for the sedimentary cover are the following: the platform sequence, shown by the rectangle and dot pattern, consists of carbonate and siliciclastic rocks of the Cheshire, Dunham, Monkton, Winooski, Danby, Clarendon Springs and equivalent formations. The slope-rise and outer rise sequence consists of four groups ofrocks each of which is characterized by a dominant set of rocks which is considered distinctive for that group. Contacts between the groups are gradational. The basal sequence consists of two groups.
